Preparation for your anesthesia

You will hold a clearly comprehensible dialogue with your anesthesiologist concerning the possibilities and course of the anesthesia during your upcoming surgery. In preparation, your medical history will be taken, a full body examination will be performed, as well as blood laboratory tests, an electrocardiogram (EKG) and if appropriate, an x-ray of your lungs.

The findings and medical history are the basis upon which the best possible method of anesthesia will be determined individually. This preoperative conversation will inform you about the anesthesia, will answer your questions and address all possible concerns. It also gives us the opportunity to optimize our regimen of blood sparing methods individually for you, which we recommend for endoprosthetic surgical interventions.

Care during the operation

In endoprosthetic surgery of the hip and knee general anesthesia and local spinal anesthetic regimes as well as periferal catheter techniques with additional sedation are commonly implemented. Your anesthesiologist is responsible for the elimination of pain and control of your consciousness. He will perform the regime agreed upon during the preoperative conversation and will constantly monitor your vital signs like breathing, blood circulation and metabolism. He thereby guarantees your well being, optimal surgical circumstances and the best possible security. To do this we have at our disposal all modern means necessary for the best possible surveillance and treatment.

What happens after sugery

In our modern recovery unit we continue to monitor your vital signs after surgery and collect blood from your drainage lines if necessary. In addition to conventional pain regimens we offer patient-controlled pain treatment and pumps. These can be controlled by you so that you can individually administer your pain medication. Back in your ward our acute-pain-service is available to assist and care for your 24 hours a day.
